When in the deserts around Abu Dhabi, do as locals do. In Carrie Bradshaw’s case that means wearing a lot of turbans. The “Sex and the City” sequel is in theaters now. And Carrie and friends are back to their old fashion tricks. But, are Carrie’s turbans something the movie’s millions of female fans can wear, say, on a run to the grocery store. Or, for a night on the town? Is the turban simply too much?!
My answer is an emphatic, NO! The turban has always been chic (nay, Sikh). Greta Garbo wore a turban. So has Kate Moss. Even Beyonce’s worn a turban. Turbans have a very long history in fashion. It would make sense that they end up atop Carrie Bradshaw’s head when she’s in the middle of the desert.
For her Spring/Summer 2007 collection, Muiccia Prada sent a parade of turban-topped models down the runway, giving the wrapped headpiece a place in the annals of 21st century fashion. So, where can you get a turban? EBay is a great place to look for inexpensive contemporary and vintage styles. Go thrifting, you’re bound to find a couple turbans in vintage stores. And even chains like Forever 21 and Urban Outfitters have been known to carry a turban or two.
What are you waiting for? Get your turban on.
